How New Bitcoins Enter Circulation
New bitcoins are introduced into the system through a process known as mining. Miners use specialized hardware to solve complex cryptographic puzzles. When a miner successfully validates a block of transactions, they are rewarded with newly minted bitcoins. This reward is the primary mechanism for issuance.

Circulating Supply vs. Total Supply
It is important to distinguish between the total supply in existence and the circulating supply. While there are approximately 20,057,028 BTC currently in existence, this number does not necessarily reflect the amount of coins available for active trading.
A significant, yet unknown, portion of these coins is considered lost. These are coins that have been rendered inaccessible due to lost private keys, corrupted hardware wallets, or the passing of owners without leaving access instructions. Because the Bitcoin network is decentralized, there is no way to recover these funds. Consequently, while the protocol shows these coins exist on the blockchain, they can never be moved or sold, effectively reducing the liquid circulating supply.
Market Impact and Scarcity
The circulating supply plays a critical role in determining Bitcoin’s market capitalization. Market cap is calculated by multiplying the live price of a single bitcoin by the circulating supply. Because the supply of Bitcoin is predictable and finite, any significant increase in demand typically results in upward price pressure, a phenomenon that has historically defined Bitcoin’s market cycles.
Investors and analysts monitor the circulating supply closely to gauge the impact of events like the halving. As the daily issuance of new coins decreases, the “sell pressure” from miners—who often sell their rewards to cover operational costs—also decreases. This reduction in supply, combined with steady or increasing institutional interest, is often cited as a fundamental driver of long-term value appreciation.
